Scrap Handling Systems

Scrap Conveyors
Recycled paper, cardboard, scrap metal punchings, off cuts, turnings or any other loose product with a flow capacity can be handled by these conveyors. Primarily designed for handling scrap metal flows from automotive press shops, these conveyors are robust enough to take on any scrap handling application.

These are principally slat type conveyors that rely on conveyor roller chain for movement. The flanged roller chain runs on toughened steel wear tracks, extending the conveyor service life. Sprockets and chain rollers are also hardened to further improve the life of the conveyor.

Two (2) styles of conveying slats exist. Each one specific to the end users product or process. All these styles can be driven in either direction with differing effects.

  • Apron Flights (slats) are steel slats with rolled “lip type” leading and trailing edges. One edge over laps the next edge and so on, this limits material being caught in the surface of the conveyor. These aprons are directional for optimum protection and are aligned with the direction of material flow.
These slats are mounted directly onto K2 attachments (angle brackets on the conveyor chain side plates). These attachments are supplied with the conveyor chain. This design allows for multiple chain strands to be employed under the conveying surface enabling the conveyor to handle heavier loads while keeping conveyor chain capacity low and minimising slat deflection.
Higher strength solid pin chain can be used to great effect on these conveyors.

  • Piano Hinge (slats) are steel plates with short tubes welded at intervals along both leading and trailing edges of the flight. These tubes are spaces so that they align and intermesh with the adjacent slat (as per a piano hinge, hence the name). A joining pin that is common to the conveyor chain assembly is passed across the width of the conveyor and through the conveyor chain links on the opposite side of the conveyor before being secured.
These slats tend to catch small “thin” items in the hinge joints, better suited for large “thicker” scrap items.
The conveyor chain on this type of conveyors is limited to hollow pin chains that generally have a lower UTS (ultimate tensile strength).
